You need to say what kind of private property. If your vehicle is parked, for instance, in your front or back yard of your single family home, then there is no way a police officer can enter your private property to ticket you or the vehicle. If, on the other hand, your vehicle is parked in the parking lot of a private apartment or condo complex, that's a different story. In that instance, the rules of your apartment or condo probably say that all cars have to keep registration up to date. If you don't, the car becomes "unauthorized." Maryland, like many states, has a statute that says that "unauthorized" vehicles can be towed from a residential place. I would imagine this is likely what happened to you.
