Legal Question in Social Security Law in Maryland

Mother in Nursing Home

My Grandmother needs to be in a nursing home but cannot afford it. She gets SS checks but it doesn't cover the cost of nursing home. Will they take her home and assets to cover the cost? My grandmother and I have a home in Florida that I don't want to lose, will they take that if it's in both our names?

Re: Mother in Nursing Home

Medicare should cover the cost of inpatient care for a short time. After that, you need to make finacial arrangements with the nursing home. It will ask about her assets, including jointly-owned real estate. It may require a lien on the real estate before admission.

Private nursing home and government-run facilitis have differant costs & rules, however. Check to see if there is a county-run facility in her location.

You should check with elder law attorneys in both Maryland and Florida for more specific answers about re-payment.
