Legal Question in Tax Law in Maryland

Innocent Spouse tax problem

Estranged spouse did not pay taxes. I was not a wage earner. I signed taxes after they were prepared by his CPA assuming he was paying . He owes taxes from 1984. I left him in 1992. IRS kept my refund this year, and have sent me the bills for approx. $80,000.00. They have a lein on the house, which is in hios nme only. I don't know what to do, Is there any help? I started working 4 years ago and I don't make enough to pay his bills. He refinanced the house and told me the IRS was paid off. HELP!

Innocent Spouse

There is some formal relief for "innocent spouses",however, it is difficult to be absolved from a tax liability under that theory.Your best course may be to informally convince the IRS to discontinue collection efforts against you and proceed against your former spouse.
