Legal Question in Traffic Law in Maryland

Driving with a falsified registration sticker

I have recently been ticketed for driving with a falsified registration sticker. I have no criminal history and have now registered the car I was driving. What is the worst that can happen to me when I go to court?

The penalty for violation of 14-107 ("Removed, falsified, or unauthorized identification number or registration card or plate") is $500.00 fine and/or up to 2 months in jail. You should not go to court without a lawyer. For further information, please e-mail me.

Re: Driving with a falsified registration sticker

Assuming you have been charged under Maryland Transportation Article 14-110 (Altered or forged documents or plates) you face a maximum sentence of two months in jail and a $500.00 fine. If the State can prove your guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, the court has several options in sentencing you, including the grant of probation prior to judgment, a suspended sentence and fine or some period of incarceration. The particular facts and circumstances of your case as well as the tendencies of the assigned judge will be the decisive issues in sentencing.

Because you face a potential jail sentence, counsel would be extremely helpful. If you can not afford an attorney, the public defender's office should be contacted to determine if they would represent you.
