Legal Question in Traffic Law in Maryland

driving without license

I have had a Maryland license for nearly 20 years, but it expired. I was cited for driving without a license and must appear in court. What is the typical penalty for a first offense?

A lot depends on the county in which you were stopped and the length of time since your licensed expired. Chances of going to jail are slim and none, however a conviction will make your insurance go through the roof. You would be wise to spend that money on a lawyer.

This depends on where you go to court. In some counties they will give you a fine only, some places will give you a fine and probation, and yet other counties will consider giving probation before judgment (no points and no conviction). A conviction of this type carries serious insurance consequences. Thus, you should get an attorney. Often an experienced attorney can help you take the right steps before court to get these charges dropped.
