Legal Question in Traffic Law in Maryland

driving without a license

While driving in may 2006, I received a ticket for $50. I paid it (by mail) and I started to receive mail from the dmv showing now another $50 plus the $50 that I already paid. I thought that it was a mistake and forgot about it until april 2008 when I called the dmv and asked what was that for. They told me that the first payment came three days after the expiration and it doubled (DC law). So I paid it immediatly and forgot about it again. On june, while I was going to the store with my wife and son, I was stopped by an officer who after reviewing my license told me that it was suspended since 2006. I didn't know why, so I went to the dmv in DC and they told me that I didn't pay the restoring fees, so I paid, but now I have to go to court in MD. In 9 years of having the license, all I've got has been 2 points for being 7 miles over the speed limit (42 in a 35mph zone). What will happen now? would I go to jail? would I be fined?

Re: driving without a license

You have one of the few defenses to Driving Suspended. While the maximum penalty for this charge can be up to 1 year in jail, $1000 and 12 points, you will be able to win this case if the State can't prove that you knew your license was suspended. I would consider hiring an attorney to handle this case.
