Legal Question in Traffic Law in Maryland

Hit & Run while driving without insurance and with suspended tags

My sister was involved in a hit and run today (she left the scene). We were contacted by the police afterwards who were trying to find her. It was a minor accident and I don't believe anyone was hurt, but she has apparently been driving without insurance since last May and her Registration has been suspended since Oct. or Nov. for failure to prove she took care of a repair order for a break light. Even if it hadn't been suspended, the registration expired in Dec. anyway. I'm not sure if your license can be suspended for lack of insurance and suspended registration but I imagine it may be. We had her call the officer who contacted us and turn herself in. What could she be facing in the way of jail time and fines? What should she do?

Re: Hit & Run while driving without insurance and with suspended tags

The penalties she faces could vary greatly depending on her driving record and the county in which county this accident happened. Hit and run carries maximums of 60 days jail/$500 fine/12 points, driving uninsured carries maximums of 1 year jail/$1000/12 points, driving on a suspended license carries maximums of 1 year jail/$1000/12 points, and suspended registration is a $280 fine and no points.

She should seriously consider hiring an experienced defense lawyer to help minimize these penalties.
