Legal Question in Traffic Law in Maryland

kangoroo court

In January of this year I had went to court for a traffic violation for making an illegal U turn. When I got up in front of the judge he asked me how do I plea? I said not guilty. The judge then called the officer to step up, but the officer did not show up. The judge then asked me do I want to adjourn the case because the officer was not there. I said no and told the judge that I'm ready to proceed. Against my objections the judge adjourned the case for the officer. In my objections I stated to the judge that the officer or the state attorney did not ask for an adjournment. I also informed the judge that there was no motion filed with the court by the officer or state attorney requesting a postponement. I went on to say that if I did not show up the court would have found me guilty of the charge.

I just wanted to know in this case can the judge adjourn the case for the officer because he failed to show up to court without the officer requesting a postponement?

Re: kangoroo court

The Court can postpone a case for whatever reason it wants. More than likely the Court did not appreciate your attitude. If you had a lawyer, you probably would have gotten a better result. Bring one to Court with you next time.
