Typically wills do not govern life insurance proceeds, unless those proceeds were paid payable to a trust or the estate. The language of any trust will control how and when the trust money can be used and will identify a Trustee.

The circumstances of your situation sound a bit unusual and suggest that you may have been a minor (under 18) when dating the former boyfriend and identified as a beneficiary. Typically funds earmarked for minors are placed into a special account which can be controlled by a guardian until age 21. In some cases you may be able to access trust funds for certain specified purposes (like college) before you reach the age for full disbursal.

An attorney will need to look at the will and insurance documents along with the terms of any trust to help you figure out what rights, if any, you may have to the funds now.
