Legal Question in Workers Comp in Maryland
workers compensation/Social Security disability case involving two states
Background: I receive Georgia worker�s compensation and am currently represented by a Georgia-based lawyer because my injury took place in Georgia. however, I had to move in with my family in Maryland while recovering this year (a contractor insurance agent from Maryland has taken care of this). As I face permanent partial disability, I want to apply for Social Security disability payments but am unsure whether I need a Maryland lawyer or my original GA lawyer to do this.
Question: Can I have two separate lawyers for two separate issues, in two separate states? What is in MY best interest, as I do not plan to return to Georgia and I don�t think my lawyer is eager for a �long haul� client?

With respect to your Social Security claim, you can use your attorney in Georgia or you can obtain the services of an attorney in Maryland. If your attorney in Georgia is not capable of filing and adjudicating your Social Security claim or unwilling to represent you for the "long haul" you may want to consider obtaining legal service from a local attorney.

Yes, you can use two different lawyers, but they may need to be in communication with one another as there may be overlapping issues. If your Ga lawyer is familiar with Social Security disability cases, it might be best to let him handle that aspect of your claim. If he/she's not, find a local attorney who has expertise in that area. Your local bar association should be able to refer you to an appropriate attorney.
