workman's compensation case

I was injured at work with third degree burns. I was hospitalized for 7 weeks. in that 7 week period I underwent surgery to repair my injuries. I went through all of the procededures and now I'm persueing my settlement. My lawyer informed me that for my case I will not be rewarded any money for pain and suffering. I am Confused. I went to work, did My job, got injured due to neglegence. What are my rights and what are my options? Thank you!

Under the workers' comp system, pain and suffering is not one of the items for which an injured worker is entitled to compensation. If there is a party other than your employer or a fellow employee who is responsible for your injuries, you could sue that party in a civil court for pain and suffering, as well as medical expenses, permanent injury, etc. But you can't sue your empoyer--your claim can only proceed through the workers' comp system.
