what is the point of suspending someones license when they have a job to get to and probation ? Isn't it counter productive

It is a form of punishment-yes it may be counter productive but the court looks at it as a saction of sorts to pinish the defendant for bad conduct.
I don't know the specific infraction that caused you to have your license suspended, but there are reasons why this is not deemed counterproductive. Secondly, the potential of license suspension is designed as a deterrent to you and others, in the hope that it will help people stay within the law. The deterrent effect would lose its teeth, if courts didn't enforce it. Thirdly, if the license suspension is the result of a driving infraction, it serves theoretically to keep the roads safer, by keeping you from driving and endangering orhers for a period of time.
