Legal Question in Disability Law in Massachusetts
Learning Learning disability accomodations for cadets in a police academy
I have a friend who has a documented learning disability and when he took the test to become a police officer through the Human Resources Division he asked for and received extra time to take the exam providing he had documentation. The test was offered to all and stated that people with disabilities are welcome to take the test because they are an equal oppurtunity employer. He passed the exam and entered the police academy and upon entering he notified the academy director that he had a learning disability and he may need accomadations to be made for him.The director never made any accomadations for him and 12 weeks later he was asked to pack his bags and leave the academy because he failed the academic part of his training .My question is this a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.Is this academy director deciding who should be a police officer based on his prejudices,or lack of knowledge of the laws.

Re: Learning Learning disability accomodations for cadets in a police academy
Two things are important: (1) You stated that
your friend only informed the director that he
"MAY" need accommodations. If he didn't put the
notice in writing or even orally ask for an
accommodation, then (a) how could the director known
what type of an accommodation your friend was seeking and (b) without the notice,
the director was under no
obligation to make an accommodation.
(2) If you think police departments in Massachusetts
are truly equal opportunity employers, you live in the State of Lala-land.
By the way, which city or town was involved?
