Legal Question in Disability Law in Massachusetts

stop payment on check

I work for a home heating oil company. We made a delivery of oil and excepted a personal check. The customer put a stop payment on the check and will not return phone calls. I have also sent a notice by mail with no responce. Can I take the check to the police or must I proceed thru small claims?
