Legal Question in Bankruptcy in Massachusetts

Not sure how to proceed.

I have several credit card debts, two in excess of $5,000.00 I am over my head, though still not on default. Social Security is $650.00 a month. $50 a week from part-time clerical job. Rent is subsidized. Every month I have to take from small savings ($1500) to pay my bills. It is going to be used up in few months. Feel ashamed but don't know what to do. If I file will lose computer , car is ten years old. Maybe defaulting would be better? Then could keep small dept. store account or one card with low credit available for emergencies. I just don't know what to do. Thank you for any help you can offer.

If over your head, consider a ch 7 bankruptcy

Bankruptcy is designed to give people who get in over their heads a new start. From what you wrote, you should speak with an attorney and see if bankruptcy protection will work in your case. You may be able to keep your car (there are limits to the value that you can keep), and you may be able to keep your computer, and your savings. If you don't know an attorney, call the Mass Bar Association for a referral, or if you are in southeast Mass, give me a call.

This message is provided to assist you in structuring your thoughts when you speak with an attorney about your situation. I am not your attorney, and you are not my client, so this is not legal advice. Legal advice can only be given after a careful interview of the client by the attorney, and I have not had the opportunity to understand the significant issues that I must understand to render legal advice. You should contact an attorney in your state to discuss your situation. That attorney can give you the advice that your situation deserves, after carefully considering the issues that are legally significant in your situation.
