Legal Question in Business Law in Massachusetts

I have a business with one name. I'd like to use a different name but keep my legal name ( for contracts etc) the same to save $$$. Do I have to file any paperwork before I start using the new name ?

As a Franchise Attorney I can only say more information is needed. Are you operating as a sole proprietorship, LLC or corporation? Normally, changes in the business name require amendments, etc. to the old business name. Consult with a good business or franchise attorney in your area for specific advice.

Yes. If your business is a corporation or partnership you have to file an assumed name for the business you are operating under.

If you are a sole proprietor, you need to file for a business certificate in the City of Boston based on the zip code used. If you are operating under an assumed name you may have to file for a FEIN with the US Treasury even though the business will remain a schedule C on your personal return.

You can file with your local city hall to "do business as" d/b/a ...I'd have a lawyer do it if I were you, it shouldn't be too expensive.
