Legal Question in Business Law in Massachusetts
company layoffs
my company let their workers know in april that the company was closing down at the end of july. at the end of april they said would be the beginning of layoffs, 5 people were laid off at the end of april and by the end of july no more layoffs were made..another company took over august 1 and everyone stood with that company. so i feel that the layoff was just to get rid of baggage they didn't want anymore. is there any legal action that can be taken..?

Unless you are in a protected class that was harmed by being in the class, or unless there is some violation of the contract, you have no apparent protections from what you described.
Re: company layoffs
It is not uncommon for a company to buy another company's assets and take some of its employees.
Unless there is a clear violation of a contractual obligation between the employees and the current employer it is unlikely to be a valid claim that you can raise.
If the action was to sell the old company to the same owners and let senior people go and keep younger ones there may be more of a claim. More information is needed and you need to speak to an attorney who represents employees.
You might want to contact an employment law specialist.
