Does an employer have a right to demand your password for a company email account?

Yes. It is the companies email account not yours. Most US companies have a written policy on the use of company email accounts. Nevertheless, they have the right to access any company email account.

If you are concerned about getting personal emails at the office, I suggest you limit them to your own email and check that email periodically during your break time. Even in doing that, do not put anything on your company computer that is personal. If you do, they will have a limited right to access that information as well under both MA and US Federal Law.

You bet they do.

My client engagement letter tells my clients not to use their corporate email for attorney/client correspondence because of this very issue. When an employee uses his/her corporate email account, that employee implicitly give your employer, who owns the account, the right to read anything in the account and the right to trace the usage of the account. That can have serious ramifications for the attorney/client relationship, privilege, and confidentiality.
