about the other guys question: -he said he got a bill from the hospital stating that his balance was $0. What you're saying is the hospital can change their mind about a bill, which to me is a legal document, and when they can do it.

Any business can correct an invoice within a reasonable period of time if it determines an error or discovers that charges or credits were misapplied.
A reasonable period depends on the circumstances and the situation. Invoices created pursuant to a written contract can be corrected up to six years later theoretically.
