Is it illegal for your current job to lie on a reference to a potential employee. And if so what can be done about it?

it is not illegal.
It may be libel, depending on what was said.
One would have to review the document with you, and discuss the matter to advise you more fully.

It is not illegal but it may be actionable depending upon what they said. Most attorneys recommend that Employers only state date of hire, date to termination (if applicable), title and if granted permission by you current compensation.
