Legal Question in Business Law in Massachusetts

Legal rights university statistics?

Some universities publish statistics (such as acceptance rate, average SAT scores, etc.). Can I use these statistics to publish a fact sheet (which will not be free) the way Business Week or US News do in their university ranking reports? Do I first have to get each university's permission? Or even pay royalties? If there are legal restrictions, am I allowed to use university statistics for back-end calculations and use these results instead of the actual statistics?

Re: Legal rights university statistics?

Facts are not a subject matter that can be protected by copyright, so, as long as you obtain the facts from documents that are open to the public, there is no restriction on what you can do with them.

Just to follow up on Atty Graves response, which is accurate. If you obtained the statistics from the university website, you should read the Terms and Conditions for that website.
