Re: opening an online business from home

You need to either get a business certificate in your town for opening an new business and apply for a Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) and register with the MDOR for sales and use tax (I assume you have no employees)or you have to open a corporation or LLC and apply for an FEIN and register with the MDOR.

The cost of being a sole propertorship usually runs about $20 filing fee. The cost of a corporation is $275 and an LLC is $500. Corporations pay an annual fee of $125 plus a state excise tax of 9.5% of profits with a minimum of $465 per year in MA.

Legal fees for creating these things vary from attorney to attorney.
