Legal Question in Business Law in Massachusetts

I have my own personal laptop at work. I use it to send out e'mails to the managers that work under me. It does contain small amount of materials of the companies.

I had an affair with a co-worker and no one knew of this. The owner one day was at my desk and decided to look thru my personal e-mail folder. He found e-mails from the co worker and me.

He is now punishing me and the co-worker for the relationship even though it was over.

My question is does he have a right to go into my personal laptop or even into my personal email folder that was marked personal. How legal was it that he did.
