Legal Question in Business Law in Massachusetts

Reprinting Greek (Fraternity & Sorority) Symbols

Hello, I am opening my own business that will create a line of customized line of polos, accessories, and ties for college students in Massachusetts. I am interested in targeting Fraternities and Sororities, but I do not know what the laws are behind reproducing the greek symbols/ fraternity and sorority names on my products. Could you please offer me some more information?

You would be wise to contact each organization (or have your legal representative do so) and obtain a written license from them in order to commercialy utilize their intellectual property (logos, trademarks, trade names, copyrights, etc.)

A suitable agreement might also include an "endorsement" clause (wherein the organization approves and promotes your product line(s).

You would be very wise to seek the advice of competent counsel.

Re: Reprinting Greek (Fraternity & Sorority) Symbols

If the symbols as used are trademarked, you will need the consent of the Fraternity who owns the trademark. If you are making them to order for that fraternity and not as a general line, you do not need the consent, just an order and a representation they have the right to use the symbols as it is the name of their fraternity.

If you need more help please feel free to contact me.
