Legal Question in Business Law in Massachusetts
Unemployment benefits
Hi,
I started a business this year and hired a sales person who was employed 10/6/03 - 11/26/03. Due to performance issues his employment was terminated. He is eligible for Unemployment Benefits according to MASS DET. If he was compensated a total of $5000 from our company, and also made an additional $30,000 the prior 12 months while employed at other companies, can you help determine our company's contribution? In other words, if we paid him $5K, will we be responsible for a percentage of $5k or $35K? Thank you.

Re: Unemployment benefits
Your obligations for unemployment are usually based upon his earnings from you. Having said that his benefits and your claims libility may be affected if he resigned his old jobto work for you.
Apart from that while his claims go against your account for rate determination you do not pay his actual benefit. You pay a contribution based upon salaries and then only up to the current limit.
If you go to the www.mass.gov site you should find a great deal of information on this. You can also call the DET for further explanation.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email me.
Re: Unemployment benefits
Unemployment office will calculate. You are only responsible for time s/he was with you. Why do you say he is eligible for benefits? You fired him and may not be liable. Send that info on return card provided by DET
