Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Massachusetts

I was on google.com searching different names of friends and I came across a particular co-worker/friend who is on the New Hampshire Criminal Registry. When I next spoke to the friend, I told him what I found, and he got very angry and said I was harassing him and I invaded his privacy by looking up his name. He said he is going to contact his lawyer. Did I do something illegal by looking up his name?

Short answer no. If the information was available on a public site, your viewing of the information was not illegal. However, be aware that if the information is false and you "publish" it to a third party (for example you print out the page and give it to your supervisor), you could have a problem.
