Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Massachusetts

Slander

A co-worker interrupted my lunch by complaining about her work assignment. It got heated by her yelling and ending by her shouting several times ''you hate black people'' ''You went to school to hate black people.'' This was done in front of another co-worker and probably heard in the hallway by others. I was left in tears (not in front of her though). I felt that I could not continue working with her and called my supervisor, apprised her of the situation and was voluntarily detailed off my ward for the day. This situation left me severely emotional upset. It is untrue and a reprehensible accusation that will no doubt ripple throughout my work building. I honestly feel that I could never work with her again. I felt such hatred and malice emanating from her. I am a union member of NAGE, National Association of Government Employees. I did meet with them that day, which was two days ago. The Union is going to try to get me a voluntary detail off my floor. What are my recourses? I will be calling the union today, and of course not one nursing supervisor has called me at home. I am so distraught over the situation. How does one defend oneself against something like that? This is also not the first time she has accused someone of racism

Re: Slander

Even though a member of a union, you may have rights to bring discrimination action at the MCAD (Mass CommAgainst Discrimination for "reverse discrimination". Tell union rep you will do so. Tell union rep that you are asking for reasonable accommodation. If you go to M CAD, ask for injunctrive relief to remove you from this situtaiton. Good luck
