Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Massachusetts

Hi,

I am wondering if it is possible to have a news article removed if it has private, personal information about me. The article has been posted on Facebook and since been shared by a lot of people. The information about me is not only completely unnecessary, but also negatively interfering in my life. I called the newspaper editor, who told me that removing a portion of the article that is about me is an "unreasonable request."

I just want to know if I can take any action against the paper or not.

Thank you

If the article contains false statements of fact about you, it is possible that you could have an action against the publisher for libel. In rare instances involving the publication of extremely private facts about an individual that amount to an invasion of privacy, and there is no legitimate public interest in the facts, one might have an invasion of privacy claim against the publisher. In these circumstances, it can sometimes be possible to persuade a news publisher to withdraw or retract something it has published. In bringing litigation, additional publicity about the unwanted notoriety can sometimes occur and is a factor to be considered.
