Legal Question in Technology Law in Massachusetts

Public Posting of a Private Message

I sent an email to someone, to compliment him on his recent book. This was a private email, not one posted in a public forum.

He then posted my email on his web site, as part of an advertisement containing other endorsements of his book. He did this without my knowledge or consent.

Is this legal? I don't know what my expectation of privacy is in this matter.

Thank you very much for your help.

Re: Public Posting of a Private Message

Unless you told him not to publish it, I see nothing wrong in what he did. It is reasonable to expect that such statements might be published unless you tell the recipient otherwise before it is published. The second difficulty with your case is that you probably have little or now damages from the publication, even if unauthorized. Chalk it up as a lesson and be more careful next time.
