Legal Question in Construction Law in Massachusetts

Had a modular second floor addition put on. We unfortunatly had NO written contract and the GC we hired brought in someone to do the electric and plumbing and the guy he brought in subbed it out and never paid the electrician and plumber. Because of this we were forced to spend thousands on a hotel due to not obtaining inspections to move home. Is the GC responsible for that and other monies we had to spend due to who he brought on the job?
