A claim filed with NStar Electric

Approximately 6 weeks ago, we had a power surge in our area. When the electricity came back on, none of our major appliances worked. I called NStar and they sent someone out. The man who came to our house informed us that we had a power surge up the road and all of our appliances had been ''shorted out''. He gave us the telephone number of the claims department. I called them and was advised to send either send receipts or to find the replacement cost of the appliances we lost and submit them. I have done that and have placed repeated calls to their claims department to no avail. I am wondering what the next step is that I need to take.

You can send a 93A demand letter specifying the value of the goods, the basis of your claim, whatever evidence you have (re-send the material you have already sent). 93A is the MA consumer protection law. Send letter certified, return receipt requested. They have 30 days to respond with a reasonable offer. If they do not, and you can't negotiate one, you may sue under the statute for your damages, attorneys fees and may recover double or triple the value of your loss.
