Legal Question in Consumer Law in Massachusetts

Hi,

My girlfriend recently went to purchase a vehicle at a local dealership. We were given the run around by them for about a week. We finally went back to the dealership to get our deposit returned. The sales manager of the dealership told us that there was a law protecting the dealership. That because they had contacted lenders we were prohibited from doing business with another dealership for 90 days. He tried to intimidate us to come up with a $5500 downpayment. If we did not, then we woulld not be able to purchase a vehicle for another 90 days. My question was a law broken? By either us for getting loan at another dealership, or them for trying to intimidate us toward a higher downpayment?

I will be interested in see what others may have to say, but I know of NO law which would prohibit you from shopping around. This may be a lie to scare you into buying a car from him. I think the dealer is the one who has broken the law. Feel free to contact my office if you would like assistance in retrieving your deposit.
