Legal Question in Consumer Law in Massachusetts

Last year I had a company service my lawn. No signed contract. This year I decided to go with another company due to price. The company from last year came out and treated my lawn. They said they sent out a letter stating to call if we wanted to cancel. I never saw this letter. They also called the night before which I did not hear until the next night after the treatment. Am I obligated to pay? I never had to sign anything so there is no legal agreement or autorenew policy I signed off on.

If you are not legally committed to the new company and can cancel with them without penalty you might offer , as a compromise, to pay last year's company what you would have paid the new company, if the work was comparable. Otherwise retain an attorney to review the specific facts and last year's contract to determine if you have any legal obligation to last year's company.
