Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Massachusetts

Car lease dilemma

5 years ago, my fiance co-signed a lease with his father with the understanding that his father would pay the bills. To make a long story short, his father did not fulfill his obligations and although the truck has been turned in, there is a $2300 balance due. My fiance wants to take care of this debt, but does not have the full amount. The collections agent that he spoke with said that he could not work out a payment plan. My fiance has no assets, no car, and no property to repossess and just started a new job. He is more than willing to pay as much as he can a month until the balance is paid, but if the company is not willing to work with him, what can he do?
