Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Massachusetts

Should I try to change my name?

I have problems obtaining credit, writing checks, even getting a library card because of someone else that has my same name and lives in my same city. I have been able to clear up the discrepancies between us in the past but it has once again happened to me. This is very frustrating, as well as embarassing. Should I consider changing my name to include my middle name or perhaps hyphenate my last name? Can you suggest a solution that will be effective? Thank you.

Re: Should I try to change my name?

At least try using your middle initial, and if you don't mind, your middle name. That should help.

You don't have to "change your name" to do that. Just start using the new name.

Is the otherr person's credit and reputation that bad? Is that other person really who he says s/he is or is that person perhaps "stealing" your identity?

One may use any name he or she likes as long as it is not with the intent, purpose, or effect of defrauding someone. (That's my understanding. I don't have the exact wording of the rule and I haven't looked it up anywhere, but that's what I've stumbled across as a general rule in the past; still, I give no guarantee that it's still true until I've checked!)
