Re: child support modifications

A modification may be allowed upon showing a discrepancy of 20% or more between an established order and a proposed new order calculated under the Massachusetts child support guidelines. Modification is accomplished by petitioning the court in the form of a "motion" requesting a decrease or increase in the payment amount. Such modifications "shall not" be allowed "except with respect to any period during which there is pending a complaint for modification, but only from the date that notice of such complaint has been given." G. L. c. 119A, 13 (a).
