Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Massachusetts

Can I collect money if I allowed someone to use my credit to get two cell phones and he let them lapse and never paid me back? I now have bad credit and he owes me around $2,000 and while I have attempted several times over the past few years to go about having him pay me back what he can until its paid off so that we dont need to go through the court to get this done, he has refused to even do that. So now Im left with bad credit, in debt and not knowing what else to do.
