Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Massachusetts

College debt

I attended a MA college in 96-97. I dropped out before the spring semester. The college wants me to pay for when I wasn't there. They wrote off the debt as bad debt. At least 2 collection agencies have sent me letters. Now I just got another one, which says I owe more than 6,000.00. They threatened, round about like, legal action. What is the statute of limitations for this? Is this a written contract, and do I owe this even if I was not attending at the time? HELP!!!!

Re: College debt

Depends on what financial agreement you made w/ college. Some colleges do not allow cancellation w/o penalty after a certain date, etc. However, you should not ignore debt collectors. You must dispute the debt in writing and request verification. Further, tell them to no longer contact you (they will then only be permitted to contact you regarding any legal actions commenced). SOL's in NY is 6 yrs unless you acknowledged debt in writing or sent partial pymt. Then the clock starts all over again. If this was Federal school loan, you will have to pay.
