Re: credit card debt
The collections agency can call you and write you letters. You have the absolute right to ask them not to contact you again, and they must stop. If they do not stop, they are in violation of a federal law and will end up owing money to you of up to $1000 for each time they contact you, plus your attorneys fees. They can also take you to court where they would likely succeed in obtaining a judgment against you. With that judgment they can levy (seize) your property, such as a car. They can also garnish your wages or grab whatever may be in your bank account(s).
Your ultimate ticket to getting rid of them is probably a bankruptcy. Whether that makes sense depends on many other factors. Feel free to contact me if you have additional questions.
