credit card from 2001

can they repo your card for a credit card from 2001, when the card did not pay for the car?

I assume you are asking if they can repo your CAR, not your CARD. So this is how it works. The credit card company or whatever agency may now own that debt can SUE you and obtain a judgment. Following that, they may obtain an execution, which is a document that gives them the ability to grab assets. They must use a Sheriff or a constable to do so. The car is an asset. It does not matter that the original debt is not connected to the car. You have a $700 exemption that they must pay to you if they sell the car. Your other option is not negotiate the return of the car for some amount.

Absent a valid court judgment, the credit card company cannot seize a debtor's motor vehicle within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
