Re: creidt card debt

Credit card companies can, and often do, take the debtors to court and obtain a judgment for the debt. The judgment allows them to do certain things, like levy a car or a house. Sometimes they can attach wages, but social security benefits are exempt. If your mother has assets, then it may be worthwhile to accept a settlement -- and by the way, you do not need to accept the $5k. You can keep negotiating it down. On the other hand, if your mother has no assets, then they can't do much to her even if they get a judgment. That's called being judgment-proof.

Good luck.
