Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Massachusetts

denial of credit

I have been denied a United Airlines credit card

(First Card) for the sole reason of a bancruptcy

incurred seven years ago (dba). All other credit

notes were "never late". Do I have recourse?

Re: denial of credit

Do you have a recourse? No, not against American Airlines (or the credit card company using their name!). That is certainly within their legal perogative and is even reasonable if not standard fare.

Another recourse for you: try another airline or another credit card company.

I believe, however, that after 10 (ten) years, record of your bankruptcy will (by law!) fall off your credit report from all credit reporting agencies. (Everything else BUT bankruptcy falls off after 6 or 7 years!)

AA, for one, now knows you declared bankruptcy and they MIGHT keep track of that fact for ... for as long as they wish, and they might deny you a card forever. Therefore, beware of applying for too many other credit cards now that you might want to get someday in the future!

Good information and good advice, right? I thought you'd say so. So now I have a favor to ask of you: I'd like you to call me sometime to tell me about your experience with bankruptcy -- how much work it was and how much if any money you saved by going through it, etc. I'm at (617) 527-0050; alternatively, just e-mail your response at [email protected], okay? Thanks.
