Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Massachusetts
disclosure of personal finances
Does a company have the right to disclose personal information to other family members on my finances and what can I do ? My brothers, sister and I all signed an agreement to pay our share of a bill unfortunately problems came up and 1 of my brothers had to file bankrupcy and I have financial difficulties and both problems were adressed to the billing dept .This is the second time this has happened and my brother and I are horrified to find our whole family knows of our difficulties. The first time it happened I called the billing dept. and told them never to disclose my personal information again, well I just got a call from my sister and she recieved a new bill stating once again my brother had filed bankrupcy and I had stated I could not pay on this account. I am so upset on this matter and did not want other members of my family knowing my financial difficulties I figured enough time has past from the first time they disclosed my finances my family would have forgot, now she sends a new bill to my sister like she was the only one that signed the contract there were 6 of us all together and again reminded her of my brothers and my hardship I feel like hiding from my family I am so embarassed please help!

Re: disclosure of personal finances
Unless there is something in writing that permits the release of personal financial information, I know of nothing that permits this. You can certainly demand from this company that they let you know on what basis they felt they could release this information without your consent
