Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Massachusetts

Discover Card Suing for 5195.00

I just received a summons for a debt that I didn't pay. I was trying to make arrangements but the collections were harrassing me so I ignored them (okay wrong now need to right it) I would like to either settle or pay monthly I don't have the whole amount and don't want my wages attached so I have to answer should I contact a lawyer for this amount? How do I defend? How do I answer the summons? I want to go to court to make arrangements what do I say. Thanks for any info and if I should contact a lawyer any idea of cost and who? Sorry for so many questions just confused. Thank you, Mike
