Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Massachusetts

I owed a old debt tcollection to a law office and I paid it through my checking account and for my final payment, I told them that I would pay final payment with a check and also spoke to a representative stating , he said he would but this did not happen, also I sent a priority letter with confirmation, so I know they got this letter. I put a stop payment ($25) with my bank on 12/24 and I got my bank statement today (1/7/08) and they still took out the monies on 12/28 after I clearly stated that I wanted to pay final payment by check. How can they getaway with this?
