Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Massachusetts

I live in Massachusetts and have considerable credit card debt. I pan to file for bankruptcy in the near future. My fiancee is debt free and received a sizeable inheritance. If we marry will she be responsible for my debts? Should I file for bankruptcy first?

I agree with Attorney Lancia.

With a few exceptions, your spouse is not responsible for your credit card debts. She is certainly not responsible simply by way of her marriage to you. She may be responsible if she used the card to make purchases for herself or if she was a joint cardholder.

As far as bankruptcy, check with a bankruptcy attorney regarding your particular financial situation.

Consult an attorney.

Depending on the amount owed and understanding the impact on your financial status and possibly employment, I would file for bankruptcy first.
