Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Massachusetts
Responding to Summons/Answering complaint
Is there a proper form to fill out on responding to a summons or should it just be a formal letter? Is it something I could do myself or should I hire an attorney? This is a summons for a unpaid credit card bill.

Re: Responding to Summons/Answering complaint
A civil summons must be responded to in accordance with the Massachusetts Rules of Civil Procedure within the appropriate statutory guidelines, or risk default. There is no specific response form available.
Re: Responding to Summons/Answering complaint
There IS a generally accepted form used for filing an answer to a complaint, but at times a court will accept something a bit less formal. Whether you could do it yourself depends on you, the amount of the debt, whether it is valid, whether there are defenses, etc.
Re: Responding to Summons/Answering complaint
It depends on the action.
Answering a complaint can be tricky, since it may have an impact on the claim.
