Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Massachusetts

Returned check

I recently found out about a bad check written a while ago for $50 that I thought I had taken care of. A collection agency called asking for $230 to pay off this debt or they will file in court.

Is asking for this much money legal? I don't have that amount, but I can pay off the check and a $25 fee. Should I just send that amount to them and consider the debt paid? Can they pursue me for the rest?

First, I would have you write that the matter is in dispute and under protest, and ask for all documents which support their claim. See what happens, and then you will be in a better position to decide.
