our union has been overcharging union dues for many years. it has now been found out what are we entitled too

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by overcharge, but assuming that you had an agreement to pay one number and they somehow forced you to pay another number, I think you should speak with an attorney. If you would like to gather up your paperwork, I would be happy to take a look at what you have.
