Appealing a case

If a defendant goes to a court for a motion to suppress evidence and the motion is denied, how does he go about appealing it to a higher court? What steps need to be taken and how costly is it? Lastly, how long does it generally take to get an appeal date? This would be a first time thing, so please elaborate.

This is an interlocutory appeal. This appeal is filed in the court wherein the motion to suppress was heard. There may be a time limit for the appeal.
